Challenges of Care for the Diabetic Patient

Purpose: Diabetes care remains a challenge to all caregivers. It is estimated that more than 25.8 million people have diabetes. It is a disease that involves all body systems and leads to major health complications if not treated properly. Attendees will examine diabetes comprehensively as an illness and will explore interventions based on evidence based best practices to obtain the most positive outcomes.
Objectives: >Identify the pathology associated with diabetes that results in multiple complications >Recognize the presentation of mental illness and its impact on the ability of patients to adhere to the plan of care >Discuss pharmacological interventions including indications, interactions, complications, and desired outcomes >Describe how specific food groups relate to blood sugar control >Describe how specific food groups contribute to obesity, insulin resistance and fatty liver >Explain why meal planning needs to include all food group exchanges as well as scheduled meal times or effective management of blood sugar >Describe methods of empowering patients in making dietary changes.
This program will award 6.2 contact hours to those who stay for the entire program and complete the evaluation at the conclusion of the program
