Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias: Update 2011

Overview/Goal/Purpose: The treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias is being continuously updated. This activity will focus on recognizing signs and symptoms, assessment, behavior challenges, and various interventions. An overview of normal aging, anatomy and physiology will lay the foundation for the program. In addition, there will be a discussion about the future direction of identification and treatment for these devastating illnesses. The GOAL is to obtain updated information and strategies that will improved the care provided to patients and enhance the well being of the care provider. This activity will provide nurses with updated information about Alzheimer's disease and related disorders that impact the provision of care.  
                    
Objectives: At the conclusion of this program you should be able to:
  • Review anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology as relates to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
  • Recognize normal aging.
  • Describe assessment data used to formulate a plan of care for persons diagnosed with a dementia.
  • Differentiate Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias.
  • Distinguish Alzheimer’s disease, depression, delirium.
  • Identify interventions for problem behaviors and safety considerations.
  • Discuss pharmacological treatment interventions.
  • Discuss end of life issues associated with dementia.
  • Explore future direction of treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias Update 2011: This activity provides 5.5 contact hours for successful completion. 
                       
Ames High  is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 

Social workers/LPCs will be awarded .55 CEUs and 5.5  hours of credit (sponsor 4207).
